Update on the Multi-Purpose Center Project
Church News
Sunday, 01 October 2006 00:00
Signs of the Multi-Purpose Center Construction Project are finally beginning to appear. Four shipping containers have been placed on church property to be used for storage of goods and articles belonging to various ministries and offices. Soon there will be an office trailer onsite from which the MPC Committee and the Construction Contractor will operate. Aaah, the sound of industry will be heard soon thereafter.

As reported previously, project work will begin with the conversion of the bookstore into the new Wedding Center office. A contractor has been selected to do the work. It is S&M Sakamoto, a company well known for their excellence in detail and fine finishing. They are currently preparing to start work in September. Completion is expected by mid to late November.

Requests for bid proposals to renovate the Sanctuary basement into temporary offices are nearly ready. Drawings and specifications are being finalized. Work is expected to begin sometime in October and completed by the end of December.

In the meantime, our Architect, Franklin Wong and Associates, is busy developing the final plans for the main building … the Multi-Purpose Center. Swinerton Builders has been selected to be the Design-Assist Contractor. Their job will be to thoroughly review the drawings and specifications for accuracy and to suggest cost saving alternatives where practical, thereby, helping us keep the costs down.

If you helped in the cleanup the basement on Saturday, September 9, and/or Likeke Hall on October 7, you know what a terrific job all the volunteers did. The basement is now nearly empty … a strange sight, indeed. Large Rolloff trash bins were filled in just a few hours. Items to be kept were transferred into the storage containers.

Over the next few weeks, a special study of the sanctuary walls will take place. A specialized consultant will be determining the cause of low volume water seepage occurring at various locations, especially the basement. The matter is not serious now but needs to be addressed to prevent the problem from worsening.

Sunday, October 29, will be the day of the second semi-annual Kawaiaha`o Congregation Meeting of 2006. It will also be the last day that such a meeting will be held in Likeke Hall. We look forward to presenting another MPC update at that time.
